RSV is the most common cause of respiratory infections in children. The virus is also widespread among older adults. Almost all children are infected with the virus before their second birthday. Virus prevalence is highest during the winter months.
The RSV vaccine for babies protects against serious illness caused by the RSV virus. The RSV vaccine will be offered to babies starting in fall 2025. This vaccine is available for babies born from April 1, 2025.
Newborn babies can become seriously ill from the RS virus. Pregnant women can therefore be vaccinated against the RS virus at their own expense . This vaccination protects their baby from severe RS virus illness for approximately six months after birth.
