The SOH

A GP Consultation Assistant (SOH) is a specialized medical assistant who has completed additional training and can therefore independently treat common complaints during their own consultations. Their role is to relieve the GP's workload by independently assessing, treating, and supporting patients with minor, non-complex problems, freeing up the GP for more complex care.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Independent patient care: The SOH works with protocols and independently assesses common complaints, such as skin reactions, minor wounds, colds, or ankle sprains.

  • Triaging and referral: She assesses the urgency of a complaint and decides whether the GP should be involved or whether she can manage the patient independently.

  • Reporting: All actions and advice performed are documented in the patient file.

  • Semi-emergency care: The SOH can provide semi-emergency care and ensure the continuity and safety of patient care.
